Easy Apple Crumble

With apples from our garden, which is just as well because you need A LOT of apples if you go for the stewing method. You can use only granulated sugar if preferred (that's what the original recipe used) but I like the added caramel flavour of the golden caster sugar.

Ingredients

  • 450g cooking apples

  • 100g granulated sugar

  • 30g golden caster sugar

  • Pinch of cinnamon

  • 150g plain flour

  • 75g salted butter, softened

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180C.

  2. Peel, core and chop the apples into 1-2cm chunks.

  3. Place the apples in a pan and add 2 tbsp of water, 50g of the granulated sugar and 15g of the golden caster sugar.

  4. On a medium heat, stew until the apples become mushy.

  5. Once mushy, stir in a pinch of cinnamon and place in an ovenproof dish.

  6. Place the flour and the remaining granulated sugar in a mixing bowl.

  7. Add the butter and use your hands to mix everything together until the mixture resembles large breadcrumbs.

  8. Pour this evenly on top of the stewed apple.

  9. Sprinkle the remaining golden caster sugar on the top.

  10. Bake for 30 minutes.

If you are making the crumble in advance, cover it with cling film and allow to cool to room temperature before placing in the fridge. When ready to cook, place the crumble in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes.
